Gaffney Receipt 5

Dublin Core

Title

Gaffney Receipt 5

Subject

A receipt from the Gaffney family records.

Description

This item is a receipt made out to Mrs. Gaffney for fare of herself and others made out by the Steamer Fulton. The item was composed by D. D. Atkinson. Mr. Gaffney is being charged for himself, two children, and now three slaves, which is reduced from the four mentioned in other receipts from the collection. The cost for the slaves and the other members of Mr. Haley’s party suggests this steamer took the party on a relatively long trip, or perhaps the party had a large amount of luggage. Either way, the slaves still make up a little more than one-eighth of the cost of the trip, though the grouping together of the other items on the bill makes it harder to be sure exactly how much the children, adults, and freight cost.
